Description
This organic Wakoucha is a stunning demonstration of rare Japanese black tea, crafted entirely from organically grown leaf grown in the southwest region of Shizuoka Prefecture. The current blend consists of Yabukita cultivated by the Iizuka family and Shizu-7132 from Taruwaki-en.
The Iizuka family has been practicing organic farming for nearly 50 years and is widely respected for their role in agrochemical-free tea cultivation in Shizuoka. Taruwaki-san, a second-generation farmer from Kawane, has grown tea without pesticides since 1990 and fully organically since 2002. His high-elevation farm benefits from clean water from the Ooi River and dramatic day-night temperature swings that help produce especially outstanding teas.
When brewed, this Wakoucha reveals a clean amber-red hue. The aroma is sweet and floral, with notes of honey, while the flavor delivers a prominent malty sweetness complemented by hints of chrysanthemum and stone fruit. Because Wakoucha is best made from the summer harvest—when tea plants are most vulnerable to pests—organic production is especially challenging, making this tea a truly limited and special offering.
