What Is the Significance of Sakura in Japanese Culture?

Ancient Japan and Sakura

The tradition of celebrating the sakura season can be traced back to ancient Japan, where its blooming season was used by farmers as a signal to start planting rice crops. As such, sakura came to represent hope and new life.

The first blossom viewing events started around 710 to 794 AD during the Nara Period. Later on, sakura parties and picnics became popular.

Sakura in Contemporary Japan

Sakura signals springtime in Japan as it starts producing flowers and blooming as the temperatures rise. Sakura season is a big deal in Japan. People celebrate it by visiting parks filled with sakura and companies capitalize on it by releasing sakura-themed products.

This delicate flower is deeply ingrained in Japanese culture and has made its way in everything from anime to food and drink, such as sakura desserts and sakura green tea. In fact, Someity, one of the official mascots for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, is based on a cherry blossom called "Someiyoshino.

The beauty of sakura has also made its way into different art forms, and continues to inspire artists to this day.

Sakura 2020 Season

The period during which sakura bloom varies per region, with the southern regions having a headstart. This year, the Japan Meteorological Corporation forecasts the 2020 sakura season to start in early March.
