Description

Yabukita is the quintessential tea cultivar in Japanese green tea production. Making up about 75% of all cultivated fields nationwide and 90% in Shizuoka, this cultivar is loved by tea drinkers for its flavor perfectly balancing umami, sweetness, bitterness, and astringency, and by farmers for its resistance to cold weather, ability to take root easily in all different kinds of soil and climates, and high yields. The name, meaning “north of the bamboo grove,” references where the tea plant was located that was selected to represent this cultivar. While Yabukita is present in most Japanese teas on the market, we are thrilled to let this exceptional cultivar shine on its own in our Competition Grade Yabukita. We believe that delving into the nuances of Yabukita lays the groundwork for a more profound appreciation of the diversity of teas.

Local tea competitions are held once a year among tea professionals, invoking a sense of friendly rivalry among producers. Teas are judged upon their appearance, aroma, flavor, and liquor. In accordance with the high standards sought after for these competitions, our production manager Mitsuhiko Masuda put his best foot forward to create this exceptional single-cultivar tea. An expert in his field, Masuda has been with Sugimoto Tea Company for over ten years. He strongly believes that passion is the most important thing when making tea and continues to work hard every day to share the taste of Sugimoto teas to more people around the world.
