Description

Our Tsubame Chasaji (tea scoop) balances elegance and function, giving ordinarily unremarkable actions a refined air. This chasaji holds roughly the same amount of tea as a standard tablespoon. The dappled, tsuchime (槌目) surface is the result of hand hammering by professional craftspeople, which means that no two pieces are exactly the same. This level of artistry for everyday items is commonplace within the area of its manufacture, Tsubame City.

Tsubame City (燕市) is located within Niigata Prefecture, about a two hour shinkansen ride from Tokyo. This area’s history of craft tool production started during the Edo Period, about 400 years ago, with the production of Japanese nails. Today, the area calls upon its rich history and inherited traditions to produce all manner of metallic kitchenware. Tsubame City is known for its quality both within Japan and internationally, so we are very excited to be able to offer a few examples of their handcrafted workmanship.

Awesome Tsubame Product

The 1.75" diameter of the spoon is the same diameter as the 15ml spoon sold on here and slightly curved and I love to use this as a small rounded spoon for scooping out tea powder when making culinary concoctions. It boasts the great Tsubame hand-hammered pattern that my other Tsubame products have. It looks and feels great to use, whether for tea or for preparing food. Very highly recommended. The price more than justifies the quality.
